Beyond the Driveway: Top 5 Winter Activities for Your New Ride-On Car

Keeping the Adventure Alive in Winter

As Christmas has passed, you are hopefully enjoying the wonderful play your child is having with their new electric ride-on car in the UK. January is a month we appreciate for its slower pace, and it is the perfect opportunity to start the year right by spending more time outdoors.

It may be cold outside, and as we are in the UK, very wet, but that should not stop you from having fun winter outdoor play for kids. The kids will love cruising around the neighbourhood to show off their own ride.

We have five top activities for keeping kids active during the winter months, using their electric cars, and some suggestions for how to use ride-on cars in the winter. If properly cared for, these cars can be used year-round!

Activity #1: The Ultimate "Winter Wonderland" Off-Road Trail

If you have got a new 4-wheel-drive buggy for Christmas, you should definitely let your kids explore the power and traction it offers. Take advantage of the slight snow, muddy trails, or frosty grassy hills, and be amazed at how they will effortlessly bring you through anything.

Off-road ride on cars takes the adventure to the next level, with their 4x powerful motors and EVA foam tyres for extra grip, and the winter months are the best time to test the limits.

If you are looking for the best ride-on car for grass and gravel, we would suggest a 4-wheel-drive 24V kids buggy. Just ensure the area where they are driving is safe, and if they are just learning how to drive, keep the parent's remote control ready.

You will find that a 4x4 kids' electric car for winter drives was a great investment when you see how they want to spend more time outdoors, where you all benefit from the fresh air and Vitamin D.

Activity #2: The Drive-In Cinema (Indoor Edition)

Could this be one of the more creative uses for ride-on toys? If it's too wet and cold outside (I know, I know, not all kids enjoy playing in the lovely and unpredictable UK weather!), this indoor activity for kids is for you! Build your own drive-in cinema in the living room with everything it usually comes with.

Kids ride on fire engine for drive in cinema

The best indoor rainy day activity for toddlers who usually cannot sit still through a whole movie! If it does not bother anyone else, they can have some ride-on car fun by pressing buttons to hear the horn honking, or, if they have the 24V Fire truck, they can watch Fireman Sam while enjoying their own sirens!

Activity #3: The "Delivery Driver" Challenge

This is a fun game that helps the kids feel helpful and contributes to the family chores. If they got a kids ride-on with a trailer or the Dirt Traxx tipper buggy, playing delivery driver or courier will most likely be a super hit!

Load up the tipper with logs to be taken from the shed to the house, or go to get the letters from the mailbox and drive them to the house like postman Pat. You can also use pretend food and place a food order over the phone for delivery using the shelf at the back of the 24V buggy.

The Dirt Traxx collection is a functional ride-on toy for gardening, teaching kids responsibility and helping them do family jobs together while having fun.

Activity #4: Winter Skills & Drifting (For the Pro Drifters)

Drift go-karts for kids are all about slipping and sliding! Taking the Pro Drifters out on slicker surfaces could be excellent low-speed drift practice. Just keep it safe and make sure it is a wide-open space.

The Pro Drifters Elite is an electric drift car that goes up to 19km/h and has a real hand brake for an authentic drifting experience. If completely new to driving, a smaller Pro Drifter go-kart might be better for learning how to drift a kids' go-kart. The best thing about both models is that their chassis can be extended as they grow.

The best electric go-karts for 10-year-olds depend on the driver's height and weight. The Pro Drifter Elite is recommended for children up to 147cm tall and has a max weight of 50kg.

If your child goes beyond this, then we have some exciting news coming this spring! So make sure to subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media (links are at the bottom of this blog).

Activity #5: The Neighbourhood "Light Tour"

Don’t let the darker evenings stop you from going on a drive with a ride-on car with LED lights, which will add to the excitement. Just ensure kids electric car safety and check that the taillights and bright headlights are working properly for them to be safely driving their kids' ride-on cars at night.

Essential Winter Protection: Caring for Your Ride

It is important to consider how to protect the electric ride-on car in winter. Ensure it is covered and protected from rain, snow and wind. We highly recommend a ride-on car cover. This will protect the car from UK dampness and prevent scuffs and paintwork marks.  Also, always try to wipe off any dirt and mud that has built up during a wintery adventure drive.

Regarding battery maintenance, as with a normal car, try to avoid letting the battery sit uncharged for too long. Try giving it monthly top-ups if it will be standing for a long time. If the battery discharges during the winter due to inactivity, contact whoever you purchased the ride-on from and enquire about spare batteries.

Conclusion: Ready for the Spring Thaw

So, get out there and make the most out of this fantastic Christmas gift! Remember that ride-on electric cars are not just for the summer, and depending on what type of car your child has, you might find that winter months are even more exciting!

Carry out some maintenance now, look after the batteries and keep them topped up (without leaving them to charge for days on end) to ensure they are ready for springtime too.

FAQ

Q1: Can kids use electric ride-on cars in the rain or snow? A: Most ride-on cars are water-resistant but not waterproof. You can drive them on damp ground or light frost, but avoid deep puddles and heavy snow to protect the electrical components. Using a waterproof ride-on car cover when not in use is the best way to prevent moisture damage.

Q2: How often should I charge a 24v ride-on car battery in winter? A: Even if the car isn't being used, you should charge the battery at least once every 3 to 4 weeks. This prevents the battery cells from "deep discharging," which can lead to a dead battery that won't take a charge when spring arrives.

Q3: Can I store my kids' electric car in an unheated garage? A: Yes, but the battery is sensitive to the cold. For the best longevity, we recommend removing the battery and storing it in a dry, room-temperature environment. If that's not possible, keep the car off the cold concrete floor by placing it on a rug or cardboard.

Q4: Are EVA rubber tyres better for winter driving than plastic ones? A: Yes. EVA rubber tyres provide significantly better grip on cold, slick, or frosty surfaces compared to hard plastic wheels. If your child is driving on winter grass or gravel, a model with EVA tyres and 4-wheel drive (4WD) is highly recommended.
