Introduction

This is the time to start planning your spring garden prep and to consider which kids' outdoor toys to add to ensure the best possible outdoor active play for your children this spring and summer.

We can't wait for our kids to start spending more time in the garden after the cold and wet months we have had this winter. A wooden swing set that is easy to change the accessories is the perfect way to keep kids entertained while ensuring suitable equipment for different ages and abilities.

But if you are wondering how to get kids to play outside even more, you should add an Airborne Trampoline, which is available in different shapes and sizes, with a very exciting new Oval and another extra-large rectangle arriving this spring!

Study after study confirms the benefits of outdoor play for children, including improved mental health, increased vitamin D levels, and physical improvements from increased activity.

Why Wood Trumps Metal for Garden Play

First, because wood is naturally beautiful, it will blend better with your garden. Since Titan Toys' wooden swing sets are strong, sturdy and 15% thicker than the standards on the UK market. Because we believe so much in our wooden poles, we offer a lifetime warranty on the wooden frames. How good is it, then, that wooden swing sets are a timeless addition to your garden?

Wooden vs. metal swing sets in terms of durability is like night and day. Metal swings often get rusty, squeaky, and unstable, while Go Wild wooden swing sets, thanks to their sheer weight, are usually held down stubbornly. Add the ground anchors, or, if necessary, concrete the poles down; this should make it very stable.

Additionally, Titan Toys swing sets are made with pressure-treated timber, using FCS-certified wood suitable for the UK climate, to ensure they are durable and long-lasting.

So, why should you choose a wooden climbing frame over a metal one? Because they are the best options for sustainable garden toys in the UK.

Size Matters: Matching the Set to Your Garden

Start by measuring your garden, taking into account the actual swing space needed when the children are playing, with no fences, poles, or furniture in the way.

Small to Medium Gardens

If you have a smaller garden, you might want to consider a more compact kids' play equipment, such as the Go Wild 3-in-1, which offers plenty of play opportunities and challenges without taking up too much space. Or if you have a toddler, you will love our Grow with Me set, which is a single wooden swing set with a baby swing and a standard swing to switch to as your child gets older. Obviously, this is a great option if you have 2 siblings: the older one is learning to swing on their own, and the younger one needs the baby swing.

Go Wild 3 in 1 Wooden Swing Set - Titan Toys

With wooden swing sets for small gardens, you will need at least 196 – 250 cm in width to accommodate the 2 suggested swings.

For a medium-sized garden, consider our Go Wild multi-play sets with climbing walls, swings and slides. Children benefit greatly, both mentally and physically, from climbing, gaining confidence, and reaching higher each day.

A customer favourite has been the multi-child garden swing set, which comes with 2 standard swing seats and a trapeze bar.

For medium-sized swing sets with heavy-duty climbing frames and slides for big families, you will need a space at least 298cm and up to 396 cm wide, depending on the combination you choose.

Regardless of which set you use, you can always mix it up with new hanging accessories, such as climbing ropes, nest swings, or trapeze bars. In our house, the absolute favourites last summer were the trapeze bar and, surprisingly enough, the standard swing, which allows them to soar higher as they build their confidence in swinging.

Safety & Installation: Tips for a Sturdy Setup

Before you order your new wooden swing set, consider the following:

·         Play area surfacing – Grass is naturally soft, but if you, on the other hand, have a concrete space where you want to erect the garden swing set, you could investigate rubber mats or wood chips to allow for children to fall off safely.

·         Safety distance for garden swings – Ensure that you have the required space for children to swing with a free and safe fall zone with no obstruction.

·         How to secure a wooden swing set - If it is flat and grassy, you will most likely get away with just using the included wooden ground anchors. Just ensure they have been assembled correctly. If you, on the other hand, have a slight slope, you might want to concrete the poles into the ground for added stability.

·         Swing set safety – Don’t leave young children unattended while swinging and playing, and practice common sense from an early age, such as don’t run in front of a moving swing! (Unfortunately, most kids won’t learn this one until they have experienced it at least once!).

Maintenance: Making Your Investment Last

As mentioned, the wood in the Go Wild swing sets is pressure-treated, which is a chemical process that forces preservative deep into the wood grain to ensure they last longer without mould or other issues. To further prevent the wooden swings from rotting, you could place them on wood chips rather than directly on muddy grass.

We recommend some seasonal care for outdoor toys. In the springtime, have a look over the play equipment and tighten all the bolts to ensure it is still in good condition after all the winter storms.

If the hanging brackets have gotten a bit rusty, it could be hard to interchange the hanging accessories. Use a stiff wire brush to remove the rust, then finish with a dry Teflon or silicone spray.

If you are maintaining your Go Wild swing set and you are considering treating the garden timber, you could apply a water-based wood stain in late spring to prevent silvering and keep the wood looking brand new. If the swing accessories have been kept safely inside, wash them off with soapy water to have them looking like new! (except for some natural fade from UV rays).

As specialists in outdoor play, we’ve found (just like other well-known brands are mentioning) that cracks in the woods are natural. They will come and go with the temperatures and humidity, but it is important to know that these will not affect the structural integrity!

FAQ's

1. Do I need to treat my wooden swing set every year?

While our Go Wild range uses pressure-treated timber protected against rot and insect infestation, we recommend applying a water-based wood stain once a year. This keeps the wood looking fresh, prevents it from turning "silver" in the sun, and adds an extra layer of water repellence for the UK winter.

2. How long will a wooden climbing frame actually last?

With proper care and the correct installation, a high-quality set from Titan Toys can easily last 10 to 15 years. Because we use thicker timber than many high-street competitors, our sets are built to withstand the "rough and tumble" as your children grow from toddlers into teens.

3. Is it normal for my wooden swing set to have small cracks?

Yes! This is a common concern. These are called "checks" and are a natural characteristic of timber as it breathes and reacts to temperature changes. They do not affect the strength or safety of the set. In fact, they often close back up when the weather turns damp!

4. What is the best surface to put a swing set on?

Safety is the priority. While many customers use a level lawn, we recommend a "soft landing" zone. Rubber bark, play sand, or dedicated play grass are excellent options. Always ensure you have a 2-metre "fall zone" around the perimeter of the set, clear of fences or garden walls.

5. Can I upgrade my swing set as my child gets older?

Absolutely. This is the beauty of our modular designs. You can start with a baby seat and later swap it for a 120cm Nest Swing or a Trapeze Bar. If your kids have outgrown their current setup, our new XL Climbing Towers (launching March 2026) are specifically designed with higher decks and more challenging features for older children.

6. Do I need to cement the ground anchors in?

For the majority of our sets, our heavy-duty ground anchors provide excellent stability when screwed directly into firm soil. However, if you have very light, sandy soil, a small "spot" of concrete around the anchor can provide extra peace of mind for high-energy play.
